10 December 2023, New DelhiBanana Variety Poovan (AAB) is also known as Mysore, Champa, Lalvelchi, Karpura, Chakkarakeli and Palavankodan. It is one of the major commercial cultivars grown throughout the country. It is a hardy variety, which can be grown on a wide range of soil and climatic conditions.

The crop duration is 13-14 months. The average bunch weight is 20 kg and it has 10-13 hands with 130-180 fruits/bunch. The bunch is medium-sized with closely packed fruits and has good keeping quality. The length of the fruit is 10-13 cm and the girth is 9-10 cm. The fruits are medium-sized with bottle-necked tips and the fruit skin is medium thick.

The fruits are acidic sweet with firm, yellow-colored flesh with a TSS content of 22-26° B. The male flower bud has multiple utilities including the pickle industry.
