10 December 2023, New DelhiBanana Variety Ney Poovan (AAB) is also known as Elakkibale, Safed Velchi, Njali Poovan, Ney Kadali, Vadakkan Kadali, and Deva Bale. Ney Poovan is the choicest diploid cultivar, which is grown commercially in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Bihar.

The duration of the crop is 12-14 months. The bunch is horizontal in position and cylindrical in shape. The average bunch weight is 12-14 kg with 10-12 hands and 150-160 fruits/bunch.

Fruits are small, slender, and 6.0 to 9.0 cm in length with a 9.0-10.0 cm circumference at the middle. Fruit is very sweet; pulp is firm with good aroma with excellent edible qualities. The fruit skin is very thin and the fruits are suitable for processing, especially for the ‘Banana Fig’ and ‘juice’ industries. The male bud of this variety is highly relished as a vegetable and for making ‘thokku’ a type of pickle that is highly delicious.
