Bilateral Meeting with His Majesty Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

05 March 2024, Amman: The FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, was received today in Amman by His Majesty Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein, King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

During the meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the 37th session of the FAO Regional Ministerial Conference for the Near East, the Director-General commended H.M. King Abdullah II’s leadership in addressing food security challenges in the region. The Director-General expressed his appreciation to His Majesty and to Jordan for hosting the 37th session of the FAO Regional Conference, highlighting its global call for more resilient and inclusive agrifood systems in the region and beyond.

The Director-General also appreciated the ongoing strong cooperation between FAO and Jordan. In particular, he referred to the Regional Observatory for Food Security in the Mashreq Region, which was launched during the opening session of the regional conference and offers an interactive dashboard of essential statistics, trends and forecasts on food production, consumption, stocks, trade, sustainability, and nutrition in the region.

His Majesty King Abdulalh appreciated FAO’s increasing role at the global level, stressing that the impacts of conflicts and climate change on the food security situation in the region require collective efforts from all parties.

The Director-General reiterated that FAO would continue to work closely with Jordan and key partners in the region, leveraging science and technology to combat food insecurity, climate change and water scarcity and to support agrifood systems transformation, building on the FAO flagship initiatives such as the Hand-in-Hand, the One Country One Priority Product, and the 1000 Digital Villages, which were key instruments to support countries in their efforts.
