Hutton returns to Scottish Game Fair

30 June 2023, UK: The James Hutton Institute is back at the Scottish Game Fair this weekend, showcasing our world-leading research at one of Scotland’s biggest rural events.

The event, organised by the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust, is once again being held in the stunning grounds of Scone Palace near Perth.

A team of experts from the Hutton are on hand, sharing our research, across the many aspects of sustainable land management, including major issues that are live in the Scottish uplands.

This year, in particular, we will be sharing our pioneering campaign to build the first map of Scotland’s mountain soil biodiversity. We’ll also be on hand to talk about the challenges detecting and managing diseases that threaten plant health in the Scottish uplands.

We’re also sharing our work at the Hutton’s Climate-Positive Farm Initiative at our Glensaugh research farm in Aberdeenshire, which includes recent peatland restoration as part of a wider, whole system approach, catchment restoration project.

Rob Brooker, Head of Ecological Sciences, at the institute, who attending the fair, says, “I think it’s really important we are back at the Scottish Game Fair, talking to these stakeholders who have an important part of the conversation around sustainable upland management.

“Uplands are under pressure from climate change and pollution and there’s a need also to look at biodiversity. There’s a lot to deal with and an important role for research to find solutions for these challenges.

“We work with all the big estates, agencies like NatureScot and non-governmental organisations the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust, the RPSB, and private land owners on land management, providing robust and reliable information for better decision making.”

The Scottish Game Fair is open to the public from 9am to 6pm today (June 30) through until Sunday (July 2).

Come and visit us on stand G12, which is at the southern end of Gunmakers Row on the eastern side of the show site.
