18 April 2024, Rabat: FAO Director-General QU Dongyu met today in Rabat with the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Forestry, His Excellency Dr Mohamed Sadiki, of the Kingdom of Morocco on the margins of the 33rd Africa Regional Ministerial Conference.

The Minister welcomed the Director-General and thanked FAO for the opportunity to host the Africa Regional Conference in Morocco. The Minister expressed his hope that the conference would focus on bringing positive changes to the ongoing challenges on the continent due to, among others, the COVID-19 pandemic, especially those related to food security and poverty, leading to food sovereignty in the region. He emphasized the need to look at the potential of resources in the region and what could be produced in a more efficient way to allow countries in the region to become not only self-sufficient, but also exporters.

The Minister appreciated the strategic relationship with FAO referring to its comparative advantage as a specialized agency and highlighted that due to FAO’s support Morocco had become a lab for climate change and climatic shocks and was also working with other African countries to build capacity through knowledge-sharing thanks to the mechanisms developed by FAO.

The Director-General thanked the Minister for the warm welcome and hospitality. He appreciated the long-standing relationship, commitment and cooperation with Morocco and expressed his deep appreciation for the support that Morocco has extended to him. He further thanked the Minister for Morrocco’s support for FAO’s mandate through the implementation of policies in support of FAO’s work in the country, and beyond. He congratulated Morocco’s growing economy and sought further support for the Organization’s reform process to strengthen FAO country offices.

The Director-General also thanked the Minister for supporting other African countries in the endeavours to achieve food security and agrifood systems transformation, and stated that he looked forward to continue working together for rural development on the continent, including the youth, to leave no one behind.
