20 April 2024, Rabat: FAO Director-General QU Dongyu met today in Rabat with His Excellency Houmed M’SAIDIE, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Environment, Tourism and Handicrafts of Comoros on the margins of the 33rd Africa Regional Ministerial Conference.

The Director General thanked the Minister for the ongoing collaboration and recognized that Comoros had huge potential with regard to the Blue Economy, and encouraged the Minister to use this to the country’s advantage and as leverage to grow its economy and to mitigate climate shocks. He further stated that the Blue Economy was beneficial for the environment, and was also cost effective. He also emphasized that it would increase, preserve, and allow regeneration of the marine environment in Comoros.

The Minister thanked the Director-General for all the efforts and work that FAO does in Comoros but noted that increased resources and efforts were required for effective implementation on the ground.

The Minister noted that Comoros faced a seven-month good fishing season and a five-month bad fishing season, and for this reason needed FAO’s technical expertise to help them develop their aquaculture initiatives.

The Director-General encouraged the government to join the Hand-in-Hand Initiative as an important instrument to attract private sector investment in their Blue Economy initiatives. The Director-General also invited Comoros to present an investment plan to be presented at relevant FAO platforms, including the Hand-in-Hand Investment Forum during the World Food Forum, as it would provide the impetus needed for investment in aquaculture in Comoros.
