Kharif 2021 sowing update: 499 lakh hectares sown till date

09 July 2021, New Delhi: Kharif sowing across India is progressing with erratic rainfall at most places. Till date 499.87 lakh hectares have been sown with an area increase of 3.02 lakh ha over normal of corresponding week last year (496.85 lakh ha). The area coverage has increased under Pulses, Oilseeds, Sugarcane and Cotton while declined under Rice, Coarse Cereals and Jute & Mesta when compared to normal of corresponding week of last year.

As per interaction of Agriculture Ministry with the States during video conference, it was noted that the States of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab have less area coverage due to erratic rain while the States of Southern Penninsula, Bihar, Jharkhand having less area coverage due to excess soil moisture.

The States lagging in sowing have confirmed that the situation is expected to improve and the sowing for Kharif season will be completed as per schedule. IMD has confirmed that post 10th July almost all areas will be covered by monsoon rain for progress of kharif sowing.

Concluding the interaction with the states, the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare has confirmed that there is no point of concern for achieving the normal area coverage in the country. 

Cotton acreage increased by 1.48 lakh ha to 86.45 lakh hectares against 84.97 lakh ha during the normal of corresponding period. Higher area is reported from the States of Telangana (1.66 lakh ha), Karnataka (0.61 lakh ha), Rajasthan (0.56 lakh ha), Haryana (0.42 lakh ha), Maharashtra (0.13 lakh ha)

Rice acreage decreased by 1.35 lakh ha to 114.82 lakh hectares against 116.17 lakh ha during the normal of corresponding period. Higher area is reported from the States of Madhya Pradesh (5.65 lakh ha), Uttar Pradesh (4.26 lakh ha), Tripura (1.54 lakh ha), Punjab (1.24 lakh ha), Maharashtra (0.69 lakh ha), Telangana (0.12 lakh ha) and Goa (0.01 lakh ha).

Pulses acreage increased by 2.40 lakh ha to 52.49 lakh hectares over normal of corresponding week 50.09 lakh ha. Higher area is reported from the States of Maharashtra (5.66 lakh ha), Karnataka (2.17 lakh ha), Madhya Pradesh (1.80 lakh ha), Haryana (0.27 lakh ha)

Oilseeds acreage increased by 11.36 lakh ha to 112.55 lakh hectares over normal of corresponding week 101.19 lakh ha. Higher area is reported from the States of Madhya Pradesh (2.67 lakh ha), Karnataka (2.04 lakh ha), Himachal Pradesh (1.51 lakh ha), Uttar Pradesh (1.22 lakh ha)
