PAU Trains Farmers In Backyard Poultry And Mushroom Production

29 December, 2020, Punjab, IN: The School of Organic Farming, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), organized a farmers’ training programme on “Backyard Poultry and Mushroom Production” in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ferozepur. The programme was held under the aegis of Biotech-KISAN project, funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. The project is aimed at demonstrating the importance of integrating dairy + goatry + backyard poultry + mushroom cultivation for nutritional and livelihood security of small farmers.

Dr CS Aulakh, Project Coordinator and Director, School of Organic Farming, highlighted the importance of integrated farming system approach in enhancing the livelihood security of small and marginal farmers. He also urged the farmers to adopt subsidiary enterprises to sustain their income.

Dr Munish Kumar, Assistant Professor (Animal Science), delivered lectures on backyard poultry and livestock management.

Dr Shivani Sharma, Mycologist, demonstrated the method of compost preparation for mushroom production.

Dr Jatinder Sachdeva, Senior Agricultural Economist, highlighted the importance of record keeping in agriculture.

Dr Sohan Singh Walia, Principal Agronomist and Co-Principal Investigator of the project, shared his experience on integrated farming system. Later, he proposed a vote of thanks.

The farmers were supplied with mineral mixture for milch animals, mushroom bags for mushroom production, and books on poultry farming and mushroom production
