10 December 2023, New DelhiBanana Variety Monthan (ABB) is also known as Bontha, Kanch Kela, Bankel, Batheesa, etc.

It is a widely cultivated culinary variety throughout the country. Though it is mostly used for culinary purposes, in North Eastern states it has dual utilities both for dessert and cooking purposes.

The duration of the crop is 12 months. The average bunch weight is 20-23 kg and 4-6 hands with 50-55 fruits/bunch. The length of the fruit is 18-20 cm and the girth is 18-20 cm. Fruits are large, plumpy/stocky, knobbed, and green in color. The skin is thick. The fruit has mealy pulp with good cooking quality and is used for culinary purposes and also for chip making.

Fruits are rich in starch content and the flour made from the fruits is used in the preparation of breads, biscuits, and cookies. Both raw fruits as well as male flower buds have multiple utilities and are highly suitable for pickle making. In major parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the working classes as well as those who suffer from chickenpox consume ripe ‘Monthan’ fruits because of their supposed ‘cooling effect’ on the body.
