25 July 2023, Chandigarh: Haryana Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Mr. Jai Prakash Dalal, accompanied by a delegation of officers and farmers, visited a fruits and vegetable market in Tokyo, Japan on the first day of his seven-day visit. The delegation got complete information about the sorting, branding, and packaging of the products in the mandi.
Mr. J.P. Dalal said that the majority of the work in this mandi is done by machines, and the quality of the product is carefully monitored. It is Japan’s largest market, with an annual turnover of over Rs. 17000-18000 crore.

The Agriculture Minister said that this visit to Japan will prove to be a milestone for new research and development in the field of horticulture and agriculture to increase the income and employment of farmers. This will significantly boost crop diversification towards horticulture. He stated that the Haryana government has set a goal of expanding horticulture area to 22 lakh acres by 2023 and tripling the production.
“After studying the techniques being used in the field of horticulture across different countries, we will adopt these techniques in Haryana as well so that the farmers of the state can also move towards becoming entrepreneurs and increasing their income,” he said. Such new techniques would not only aid farmers but will also help Haryana establish a distinct identity in the field of horticulture.
Haryana government to set up mandis for fruits, flowers, vegetables
The Haryana Government is encouraging farmers to promote horticulture, promoting crop diversification, and reducing traditional cultivation. The state provides subsidies and setup separate mandis for fruits, flowers, and vegetables. International Horticulture Market, located in Gannaur, Sonipat, aims to enable farmers to sell their produce and products directly across the country and abroad.
The delegation includes the Additional Chief Secretary, Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Department Mr. Sudhir Rajpal, Deputy Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Mr. K Makarand Pandurang, Director General, Horticulture Department, Dr. Arjun Singh Saini, Joint Director, Dr. Jogendra Singh, and Padma Shri awardee, Mr. Kanwal Singh Chauhan.
