09 September 2022, Madhya Pradesh: Onion farmers are facing the challenge of low prices of onion in the wholesale market. Farmers have not been getting enough rate to cover their cost of cultivation from last two years. The prices are lowest in two years even with low arrival. If the arrival quantity increases, farmers will have to sell onion at give away prices of Rs. 1-2/kg. This will not even cover thir transportation cost and ultimately farmer will be forced to throw away his produce.

As per Agmark, Madhya Pradesh Wholesale price for onion remained at Rs 643.54/quintal for the first 7 days of September month. This is 18 percent less than last week’s prices (Rs  695.51/quintal) and more than 37% less than last year September first week prices (Rs 1024.94/quintal).

Consumers are buying onions from the market at rate of 25-30 rupees/kg. There is almost a difference of 15 – 18 rupees at which the traders are selling it forward with a hefty margin.
