China: Accelerate the construction of an agricultural power and draw a new picture of rural revitalization
08 January 2024, China: President Xi Jinping pointed out in his 2024 New Year’s message that grain production has been abundant for 20 consecutive years and rural revitalization has shown a new look. At the beginning of this year, in the fields of hope, hundreds of millions of farmers started new cultivation, accelerated the construction of an agricultural power, and painted a new picture of rural revitalization.
In the cold winter, the Northeast villages covered by ice and snow are still steaming. In Zhenxing Village, Wuchang City, Heilongjiang Province, village party secretary Yu Dianhong specially invited the live broadcast team of the e-commerce platform to launch a special sales session of Wuchang rice for the village cooperative.
Although Zhenxing Village, located in the core rice-producing area of Wuchang, suffered the worst flood disaster in many years in early August last year, everyone worked together to minimize the disaster losses. As the Spring Festival approaches, Wuchang rice sales peak, and villagers are working overtime to prepare new year orders.
In 2023, despite encountering rare natural disasters, my country’s grain production still achieved its 20th consecutive harvest, with grain output reaching a new high. Behind this hard-won harvest is the fact that the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core has always regarded solving the problem of feeding a population of more than one billion as the top priority in governing the country.
In the past year, General Secretary Xi Jinping has always attached great importance to food security, whether he held important meetings or conducted in-depth grassroots inspections and surveys. In Cangzhou, Hebei, he investigated the development and utilization of saline-alkali land and the promotion of saline-alkali tolerant varieties. In Bayannur, Inner Mongolia, he inspected the soil and seeds and paid attention to scientific irrigation. At the Central Rural Work Conference held at the end of last year, General Secretary Xi Jinping made important instructions, stating that the party and government must fully implement the shared responsibilities for food security and persist in stabilizing area and increasing yields.
A new journey begins, a new struggle begins.
At present, various regions are seizing the golden period of construction during the winter slack period and carrying out high-standard farmland construction in full swing. In Jiangxi, the total investment of more than 8 billion yuan in high-standard farmland construction has led to the upgrading and renovation of more than 3,000 farmlands in 93 counties and districts across the province.
This year, our country will continue to increase the area of new and improved high-standard farmland, add 100 corn, 100 wheat and 102 rape counties to promote the large-area yield improvement system, and launch soybean yield improvement projects and large-scale entities to increase production.
This year, our country will continue to promote research on key core agricultural technologies, promote self-reliance and self-reliance in seed industry science and technology, autonomous and controllable seed sources, and strengthen support for agricultural machinery and equipment. This agricultural machinery company located in Chenzhou, Hunan, used to focus on small-horsepower crawler tractors in the southern hilly areas. Now, they have made the “small” agricultural machinery “big” and launched 160-horsepower and 180-horsepower crawler-type tractors to fill the gap. In order to identify the gap in the domestic market, the new batch of products launched at the beginning of the new year were quickly booked.
Today’s rural areas in China have gathered more “young people”. More than 12 million young people have returned to their hometowns to start businesses and realize value and gain growth in the fields and mountains and rivers.
In the past few days, 100,000 acres of avocados in Menglian, Yunnan have gradually matured and entered the peak sales season. Dameng, a “new farmer” who was once a photographer, led the villagers to build an avocado-themed agricultural, cultural and tourism integrated farm that will welcome its first batch of guests during the Spring Festival.
