Severe Heatwave Warning: IMD Predicts Higher Temperatures in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and More

20 March 2024, New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that India is expected to experience extreme temperatures and an increased number of severe heatwaves during the month of April. According to the IMD, the states of Odisha, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana will be particularly affected by these intense heatwaves starting as early as March.

Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the Director General of Meteorology at IMD, stated, “We anticipate a higher frequency of heatwave days across most parts of the country over the next three months. The heatwave conditions could impact states in the east-central region such as Odisha, as well as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana.”

The IMD further highlighted that specific areas in India, including Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, north interior Karnataka, and various parts of Maharashtra and Odisha, will experience more heatwave days than usual.

Additionally, the IMD has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall and hailstorms in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha on March 20. The following weather conditions are expected in different regions:

  • Gangetic West Bengal and Bihar are likely to experience rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds on March 20 and 21.
  • Jharkhand and Odisha can expect rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds on March 20.
  • Hailstorms are highly likely in Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand on March 20.
  • Heavy rainfall is expected in Bihar and Odisha on March 20.
  • Moderate rainfall, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, is anticipated in East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh on March 20.
  • Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam may experience isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and rainfall on March 20 and 21.
  • From March 20 to 26, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal are likely to witness rainfall accompanied by isolated thunderstorms and lightning.
  • Arunachal Pradesh is expected to receive heavy rainfall or snowfall on March 20, 21, and 23.
  • Similar weather conditions are expected in Sikkim on March 20 and 23.
  • Assam and Meghalaya are predicted to experience heavy rainfall on March 21.
