Scientist – Farmers interface programme on Pig-cum-fish farming

13 March 2024, New Delhi: ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar organised a Scientists-Farmers interface programme on Pig-cum-fish farming in Sarmeen Hanse, Karbi Anglong district of Assam, The Programme aimed at enhancing aquaculture productivity through integrated farming.

Dr. Pramoda Kumar Sahoo, Director, ICAR-CIFA, urged the need for improving aquaculture productivity through the integration of aqua ponds with pig farming.

Dr. S Adhikari, Principal Scientist and Coordinator, ICAR-CIFA, NEH Programmes, described the events of developmental activities undertaken by ICAR-CIFA for the livelihood improvement of the people of this region. Similarly,

Mr. Ratneswar Rongpi, District Fisheries Development Officer, Karbi Anglong, emphasised utilising the pond dikes for growing pigs for getting maximum return per unit area.

Dr. C K Misra, Principal Scientist & co-coordinator, ICAR-CIFA, NEH Programmes, briefed the objectives of the event.

The technical sessions provided aquafarmers with management solutions for better results from the pig-cum-fish farming system. Inputs like fish fingerlings, piglets, and pig feed, were distributed and visits were made to the pig-cum-fish farming demonstration ponds. Scientists also discussed feeding, health, and soil and water quality management at each farmer’s pond, ensuring better results for the beneficiaries.

More than 30 participants including Scientists, extension officials and progressive farmers of the Karbi Anglong district of Assam, attended the programme.
