Researchers should come out with unique innovations and protect their Intellectual Property Rights: Prof H.K.Chaudhary, Vice Chancellor

08 August 2023, Palampur: A day-long workshop on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) was held at Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, here today.

While addressing the research scholars, students, scientists and other participants, Chief Guest Prof H.K.Chaudhary, Vice Chancellor said that the research scholars and students should keep working hard with concentration and come out with new and unique innovations useful to the farming community.

The Vice Chancellor told that intellectual property includes ideas and innovations which have commercial importance and value. He also spoke on the importance of Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Right Act which helps in protecting crop varieties, etc. He spoke on the need of converting knowledge into technology and getting patents, popularizing two products of each district, Vocal for Local and getting Geographical Indicators (GI). He asked participants to be aware about PPV & FRA, IPRs, GIs and patents and enlighten the farmers also.

He appreciated the IPR Cell in the University for registering a number of local land races and helping farmers in getting national awards. He told students that nothing is free and one should make efforts to protect ones intellectual property. The Chief Guest also released a ‘Status paper on GI in HP and an ‘Album on floral diversity in HP by the University research scholars.

Delivering his special lecture, Dr S.C.Sharma, retired Director Research, detailed intellectual property management and technology transfer. He said that just like writing a will for one’s personal property, scientists should protect their scientific innovations and other intellectual property.

Dr S.P.Dixit, Director Research, Dr Daisy Basandrai, Chairperson, IPR Cell; Drs V.K.Sood and Raj Pathania also spoke on the importance of IPRs.
