Prof Chander Kumar, Minister of Agriculture & AH inaugurates National Workshop on ‘One Health and Nutritional Security’ at CSKHPAU

19 July 2023, Palampur: A national workshop on ‘One Health and Nutritional Security ‘ was held at Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar H.P.Agriculture University,here today.

Chief Guest Prof Chander Kumar, Minister of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, in his inaugural address, exhorted the scientists to create awareness among the public about the importance of the good health of humans, animals and environment protection.The Minister said one health concept is essential as it involves human beings and animals.In earlier times cows were taken good care by people but now several problems like monkey menace, abandoned animals, etc have arisen due to human apathy and greed.He said that many times environment related disease in animals are transmitted to human beings.He cited example that in earlier times, people were advised not to eat meat or fish in rainy season but now such precautions are not observed.The Chief Guest said that coarse grains were part of human diet and animal feed but such millets rich in carbohydrates, proteins, etc have been abandoned.He said that awareness about such issues should be created for good health and protecting environment.The Minister discussed importance clean water, hygienic food, quality feed, etc for nutritional security and good health.He discussed maintaining balance between human needs and environment protection.The Chief Guest underlined the importance of cleanliness in cow sheds, homes, farms, etc.

In his presidential remarks, Prof H.K.Chaudhary, Vice Chancellor said that the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology in his University has taken good initiative to enlighten the general masses and all concerned about human health, animal health and environmental health.He said that it is equally important to protect and preserve human health and animal health as there are many disease which are inter transferable among themselves.He asked all stakeholders to adopt and spread ‘One Health’ approach in control and prevention of zoonotic or animal transmitted diseases like brucellosis, tuberculosis, rabies, scrub typhus etc.There is need to enlighten masses about health hazards due to environmental pollution.

Guest of honour Dr.Hans Raj Khanna, Joint Commissioner, Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying ,Govt of India said that protection of planet health is vital with participation of multi sector approach.He said that around one million people die annually with around 200 zoonotic diseases.Dr Sunil Raina, co organising secretary also spoke about the relevance of one health.

Dr Ravindra Kumar, Dean, Dr G.C.Negi College of Veterinary and Animal Science; Dr S.P.Dixit, Director Research also expressed their views.

Dr Ashok Kumar Panda, organising secretary told that around 150 progressive farmers, veterinary officers from the State department of Animal Husbandry, doctors from Dr Rajendra Prasad Govt Medical College, Tanda, scientists from IVRI Regional Station, Palampur, faculty and PG students from Dr G.C.Negi College of Veterinary and Animal Science took part in the University statutory officers and officers from local administration were also present during the inaugural ceremony.
