Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Releases Second Advance Estimates of Major Agricultural Crops for 2023-24

01 March 2024, New Delhi: The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has recently published the Second Advance Estimates of Major Agricultural Crops for the year 2023-24. This estimate focuses on the Kharif and Rabi seasons, as the summer season has been separated from the Rabi season starting from the previous agricultural year.

The estimates are primarily based on information provided by State Agricultural Statistics Authorities (SASAs). The data received has been carefully validated and cross-checked with inputs from Remote Sensing, the Weekly Crop Weather Watch Group, and other agencies. Additionally, factors such as climatic conditions, historical trends, price movements, and mandi arrivals have been taken into account during the preparation of these estimates.

Here are the production details for various crops during the Kharif and Rabi seasons:

Kharif Foodgrains: 1541.87 LMT
Rabi Foodgrains: 1551.61 LMT
Kharif Rice: 1114.58 LMT
Rabi Rice: 123.57 LMT
Wheat: 1120.19 LMT
Kharif Maize: 227.20 LMT
Rabi Maize: 97.50 LMT
Kharif Shree Anna: 128.91 LMT
Rabi Shree Anna: 24.88 LMT
Tur: 33.39 LMT
Gram: 121.61 LMT
Kharif Oilseeds: 228.42 LMT
Rabi Oilseeds: 137.56 LMT

Rapeseed & Mustard: 126.96 LMT
Sugarcane: 4464.30 LMT
Cotton: 323.11 Lakh Bales (170 Kgs. each)
Jute: 92.17 Lakh Bales (180 Kgs. each)

The estimated production of Kharif foodgrains is 1541.87 LMT, while Rabi foodgrains are estimated at 1551.61 LMT.

Kharif Rice production is estimated to be 1114.58 LMT, showing an increase of 9.46 LMT compared to the previous year’s production of 1105.12 LMT. Rabi Rice production is estimated at 123.57 LMT. Wheat production is estimated at 1120.19 LMT, which is 14.65 LMT higher than the previous year’s production of 1105.54 LMT.

The estimated production of Shree Anna is 128.91 LMT for the Kharif season and 24.88 LMT for the Rabi season. Jowar production is estimated at 15.46 LMT for Kharif and 24.88 LMT for Rabi, representing an increase compared to the previous year. Nutri/Coarse Cereals production is estimated at 356.11 LMT for Kharif and 144.61 LMT for Rabi.

Tur production is estimated to be 33.39 LMT, similar to the previous year. Gram production is estimated at 121.61 LMT, slightly lower than the previous year but higher than the average production from 2018-19 to 2022-23. Lentil production is estimated at 16.36 LMT, higher than the previous year’s production of 15.59 LMT.

Soybean production is estimated at 125.62 LMT, and Rapeseed & Mustard production is estimated at 126.96 LMT, similar to the previous year. Cotton production is estimated at 323.11 Lakh Bales (of 170 Kg each), and Sugarcane production is estimated at 4464.30 LMT.

The estimates for Kharif crop production are based on the yield from Crop Cutting Experiments (CCEs). However, some states are still compiling the results of Kharif CCEs, and ongoing CCEs for certain crops like Tur, Sugarcane, and Castor may lead to changes in subsequent estimates. The production of various summer crops will be included in the forthcoming third advance estimates.
