KVK langroya launches school initiative for awareness against paddy residue burning

31 October 2023, Punjab: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Langroya, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, organized a campaign against the burning of paddy residue on the 27th of October, 2023, at the Government Senior Secondary Smart School, Kariha. The initiative, guided by Dr Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training) at KVK, aimed to mobilize the school students, making them torchbearers in the fight against crop residue burning.

During the programme, Dr Baljit Singh, an Assistant Professor in Plant Protection, shed light on the detrimental consequences of crop residue burning, emphasizing the paramount need for responsible residue management. Mrs Renu Bala, Demonstrator in Home Science, presented an overview of KVK’s activities, while Dr Kirandeep, Assistant Professor of Agricultural Engineering, discussed various residue management technologies. Dr Arti Verma, Assistant Professor of Vegetable Science, highlighted the importance of integrated nutrition gardening.

In a bid to involve students actively in this vital cause, KVK Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar organized a Jaagrukta rally and hosted declamation, essay writing, and painting competitions. These events were designed to sensitize students to the harmful effects of paddy residue burning and were expertly guided by KVK scientists and the school faculty. The students participated enthusiastically in these competitions, and the deserving winners were recognized and rewarded for their efforts.

The event culminated with heartfelt thanks from Smt Ranjit Kaur, Principal of the Government Senior Secondary Smart School, Kariha, who expressed her gratitude to the KVK experts and pledged full support for this noble environmental cause.
