CABI appoints new Chief Financial Officer

02 May 2024, Africa: CABI is pleased to announce the appointment of Leonard (Leo) Kimutai Tonui as its next Chief Financial Officer. Mr Kimutai has also joined the CABI Board as an Executive Director following the approval of his appointment by CABI’s 48 Member Countries. He will be based at CABI’s Nairobi office.

Dr Daniel Elger, CABI’s Chief Executive Officer, said, “We are delighted to welcome Leo to the CABI team. As we continue to grow our organization and its global impact, Leo brings highly relevant experience in financial leadership and strategy development.”

Prior to joining CABI, Mr Kimutai was Chief Financial Officer for Almasi Beverages in Kenya. Mr Kimutai previously held several senior roles within Unilever companies, including Unilever East Africa, Unilever Tea East Africa and Lipton Limited, Kenya, and was the Strategy and Performance Director of Coca Cola Beverages Africa.

Mr Kimutai said, “I’m delighted to be joining CABI, whose mission very much aligns with my own vision and values. This includes supporting efforts to improve food security and livelihoods while addressing major challenges such as climate change.”

Leo holds an MBA and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Nairobi, and he is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya.

Mr Kimutai replaces Rob Sloley, who is retiring in June. Dr Elger added, “I would like to thank Rob Sloley for his sterling service to CABI and his many achievements as CFO, and wish him all the best for his retirement.”

Mr Kimutai’s appointment was made after a rigorous international search conducted for CABI by Odgers Berndtson as their search partner.
