Government Issues Quality Guidelines for IFFCO’s Nano Urea Fertilizer Production

12 March 2024, New Delhi: The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, under the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, has issued an official order on Monday regarding the specifications for Nano Urea fertilizer (liquid) to be manufactured by M/s IFFCO in India. This order, which will be effective for three years from the date of publication in the Official Gazette, aims to ensure quality and standardization in the production of Nano Urea fertilizer.

As per the order, the following specifications have been notified by the Central Government:

1. Total Nitrogen (as N), percent, by weight should be a minimum of 1-5.
2. pH (Liquid Nano Urea) should range between 4.5-6.0.
3. Viscosity in cP should be maintained between 5-30.

Furthermore, the order specifies the Particle Size in nanometers (nm) in both physical and hydrodynamic dimensions. According to the order, the physical particle size, as per TEM analysis, must have a minimum of 50 percent of the material falling within the range of 20-50 nm. Similarly, the hydrodynamic particle size, as per DLS analysis, should have a minimum of 50 percent of the material falling within the range of 20-80 nm. Lastly, the order emphasizes that the Surface Charge/Zeta potential should be greater than 30.

The order, signed by Yogita Rana, Joint Secretary, falls under the provisions of clause 20 D of the Fertiliser (Inorganic, Organic or Mixed) (Control) Order, 1985.

This initiative by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare aims to regulate and ensure the production of high-quality Nano Urea fertilizer in India. The specifications outlined in the order will contribute to the overall improvement of agricultural practices and promote sustainable farming methods.
