70% sowing of Kharif crop completed with bountiful rains, 8 lakh hectare increase in coverage area

28 July 2023, New Delhi: The Ministry of Agriculture has released the latest data on the sowing area of Kharif crops till June 21, 2023. As per these figures, the estimated coverage area is 1091.73 lakh hectare, but so far the total area sown under Kharif crops is 733.42 lakh hectare. There has been a total increase of 8.43 lakh in the area sown as compared to the same period last year. There is a significant increase in the sowing of paddy and coarse cereals.

Paddy: Paddy coverage has been recorded in about 180.20 lakh hectare area as compared to last year’s corresponding period (175.47 lakh hectare). Thus 4.73 lakh hectare more area has been covered as compared to last year. Over-sowing has been reported in the states of Madhya Pradesh (7.07 lakh hectare), Bihar (5.64 lakh hectare), Uttar Pradesh (4.07 lakh hectare), Telangana (1.20 lakh hectare), West Bengal (0.62 lakh hectare), Rajasthan (0.43 lakh hectare). Apart from this, Odisha (4.12 lakh hectare), Chhattisgarh (2.33 lakh hectare), Assam (1.80 lakh hectare), Jharkhand (1.14 lakh hectare), Maharashtra (1.05 lakh hectare), Haryana (0.94 lakh hectare), Punjab (0.91 lakh hectare), Andhra Pradesh (0.68 lakh hectare), Manipur (0.36 lakh hectare), Karnataka (0.24 lakh hectare), Jammu and Kashmir ( 0.13 lakh hectare), less area is reported from the states. 

Pulses: About 85.85 lakh hectare area coverage has been registered under pulses as compared to the corresponding period of last year (95.22 lakh hectare). Thus, 9.37 lakh hectare less area has been covered as compared to last year. More area has been reported from the states of Rajasthan (3.57 lakh ha), Uttar Pradesh (0.87 lakh ha). Karnataka (7.91 lakh hectare), Maharashtra (3.27 lakh hectare), Odisha (0.93 lakh hectare), Madhya Pradesh (0.68 lakh hectare), Chhattisgarh (0.46 lakh hectare), Haryana (0.27 lakh hectare), Andhra Pradesh (0.16 lakh hectare), Gujarat (0.06 lakh hectare), Tripura (0.06 lakh hectare), Uttarakhand (0.03 lakh hectare), Assam (0 Less area has been reported from the states of Tamil Nadu (0.02 lakh ha), Tamil Nadu (0.01 lakh ha), Bihar (0.01 lakh ha), and West Bengal (0.01 lakh ha). 

Coarse Cereals: The coverage of coarse cereals has been recorded in about 134.91 lakh hectare area as compared to the corresponding period of last year (128.75 lakh hectare). Thus 6.17 lakh hectare more area has been covered as compared to last year. Rajasthan (6.74 lakh hectare), Uttar Pradesh (1.82 lakh hectare), Madhya Pradesh (1.66 lakh hectare), Bihar (1.00 lakh hectare), Haryana (0.74 lakh hectare), Telangana (0.31 lakh hectare), Gujarat (0.31 lakh hectare), Punjab (0.14 lakh hectare), Himachal Pradesh (0.08 lakh hectare), Assam (0.01 lakh hectare) and West Bengal (0.0 1 lakh hectare) states have been reported. Less area has been reported from the states of Karnataka (3.07 lakh ha), Maharashtra (2.50 lakh ha), Odisha (0.52 lakh ha), Chhattisgarh (0.18 lakh ha), Andhra Pradesh (0.14 lakh ha), Jharkhand (0.07 lakh ha), Jammu and Kashmir (0.06 lakh ha), Uttarakhand (0.06 lakh ha) and Tamil Nadu (0.03 lakh ha).

Sugarcane: Sugarcane coverage has been recorded in about 56.00 lakh hectare area as compared to last year’s corresponding period (53.34 lakh hectare). Thus 2.66 lakh hectare more area has been covered as compared to last year. More area has been reported from the states of Uttar Pradesh (3.91 lakh ha), Karnataka (0.98 lakh ha), Madhya Pradesh (0.29 lakh ha), Punjab (0.16 lakh ha), Tamil Nadu (0.08 lakh ha) and Odisha (0.01 lakh ha). Less area has been reported from the states of Maharashtra (1.60 lakh ha), Gujarat (0.40 lakh ha), Chhattisgarh (0.01 lakh ha). 

Jute: About 6.36 lakh hectare area coverage has been registered under Jute and Mesta as compared to last year’s corresponding period (6.92 lakh hectare). Thus, 0.57 lakh hectare less area has been covered as compared to last year. Less area has been reported from the states of Bihar (0.39 lakh ha), West Bengal (0.16 lakh ha), Assam (0.01 lakh ha), and Odisha (0.01 lakh ha). 

Cotton: About 109.69 lakh hectare area coverage has been registered under cotton as compared to the corresponding period of last year (109.99 lakh hectare). Thus 0.30 lakh hectare less area has been covered as compared to last year. The area under cotton has increased in the states of Gujarat (2.28 lakh hectare), Rajasthan (1.48 lakh hectare), Telangana (0.55 lakh hectare), Madhya Pradesh (0.40 lakh hectare), and Haryana (0.20 lakh hectare). Less area has been reported from the states of Karnataka (2.06 lakh ha), Andhra Pradesh (1.79 lakh ha), Punjab (0.79 lakh ha), Odisha (0.28 lakh ha), Maharashtra (0.19 lakh ha) and Tamil Nadu (0.01 lakh ha).
