China: International Conference on Salt-affected Soils Held in Weifang, Shandong
10 September 2022, China: The International Conference on Salt-affected Soils was held in Weifang, Shandong Province, on Sept. 7, 2022. Vice Minister Ma Youxiang of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China (MARA) attended the conference and delivered a keynote speech. Jiang Cheng, Deputy Governor of Shandong Province, delivered remarks.
Vice Minister Ma pointed out that widely distributed salt-affected soils are a major constraint on the sustainable development of global agriculture. It is imperative to step up efforts to improve salt-affected soils so as to contribute to global food security. China stands ready to join hands with all parties to strengthen cooperation on salt-affected soils improvement by setting up platforms for international exchanges, promoting cooperation on resource monitoring, advancing technology R&D, and further boosting promotion and guidance to the public.
Themed “Salt-affected Soils and Food Security”, the conference was co-hosted by MARA and the People’s Government of Shandong Province. More than 180 participants attended the conference, including agricultural ministers of multiple countries, diplomatic envoys of countries with salt-affected soils, representatives of relevant international organizations, and renowned experts and scholars in soil science from China and abroad. The Weifang Initiative of the International Conference on Salt-affected Soils was released.
