14 June 2023, North Carolina: As the global leaders in Nutrient Use Efficiency (NUE), it should come as no surprise that Verdesian Life Sciences continues to raise the bar – and its momentum – with respect to NUE all over the world. And few regions have embraced NUE technology like India, as some recent developments have proven.

Verdesian was awarded The Global Leadership Award in Biostimulants and Nutrient Use Efficiency (NUE) Solutions at BioAg India in 2023, which was held in New Delhi in late April. The award was presented by the Indian Agriculture Minister Mr. Narendra Singh Tomar to Rick Riegner, Executive Vice President – International Business & M&A, and R.K. Goyal, Managing Director South Asia & South East Asia at Verdesian Life Sciences.

“This award is a testament to both the NUE biostimulant technology by Verdesian as well as the incredible team we have all over India,” said Goyal. “The most exciting part is we are just beginning to scratch the surface of how our NUE technologies can impact and improve agriculture across India, as well as growers’ bottom lines.”

More improvements for efficiencies for India agriculture are possible – and in the near future. Currently, nearly all Indian farmers use urea. In fact, the nation is the No. 1 importer of urea and its second largest consumer equaling 33 million tons of use. To put that in perspective, India uses 66 percent more fertilizer than the United States per hectare of agriculture land with lower yield outputs. With nitrogen efficiency products available, the effective and efficient use of N fertilizers in India could have monumental sustainability and crop yield impacts while allowing the redirection of billions of dollars currently subsidizing nitrogen.

“If we can encourage even a small percentage of farmers across India to begin utilizing Nitrogen efficiency products and other NUE products into their management plans, we will see a tremendous improvement in crop yield, crop quality and environmental impacts,” said Goyal.

The industry is taking notice. In a recent visit across India, Riegner met with more than 20 partners that have successfully commercialized 11 Verdesian products in the last two years.

“Our excitement in India is at an all-time high; the entire country’s desire to be a leader in sustainable agriculture and the accelerated pace of product adoption is positioning India to be a true global leader they aspire to be,” said Riegner. “We are positioned well with our team, partners and products to lead the sustainable revolution and will invest behind this.”
