Turkey permits banned pesticide use due to lack of alternatives

12 January 2022, Ankara: The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Turkey has extended the permission for the use chloridazon, dimethoate, desmedipham, ethoprophos and linuron for the second time.

While all the five pesticides are banned in European Union (EU) countries, the decision to revoke the ban was due to “lack of alternatives,” the ministry stated.

Two years ago, the ministry asked for opinions from universities and the plant protection sector about 41 pesticides, including these seven pesticides. In November 2019, the ministry banned several pesticides. However, due to unavailability of alternatives, five of them had to be given permission for sale.
