Central government starts sale of ‘Bharat’ rice, priced at just Rs 29 per kg

10 February 2024, New Delhi: Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Piyush Goyal on Wednesday launched the sale of cheap rice under the Bharat name. This rice will be sold through the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED) and National Consumer Cooperative Federation of India (NCCF) as well as through Kendriya Bhandar outlets and major e-commerce platforms.

Bharat Rice will be sold at Rs 29 per kg and will be available in 5 and 10 kg packs. Union Ministers on Wednesday sold this rice by giving 5 kg packs to 5 beneficiaries. Along with this, flagged off 100 mobile vans laden with Bharat rice. In the first phase, the government has allocated 5 lakh tonnes of rice for sale in the retail market. Goyal said that under the guidance of the Prime Minister, Bharat Rice will be made available at just Rs 29 from today. So that there is no additional burden on middle-class families. 

Similarly, Bharat Dal (chana dal) is also being sold by these 3 agencies at Rs 60 per kg for a 1 kg pack and Rs 55 per kg for a 30 kg pack along with onion at Rs 25 per kg. Apart from these 3 agencies, state-controlled cooperative societies of Telangana, Maharashtra, and Gujarat are also involved in the retailing of Bharat Dal. With the start of the sale of ‘Bharat’ rice, consumers can get rice, flour, pulses as well as onions from these stores at fair and affordable prices.
