Vietnam and EU promote cooperation and development of agriculture, forestry and fishery

22 February 2022, VN: On the afternoon of February 18, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan had a meeting with Executive Vice President of the European Commission (EC) Frans Timmermans.

According to Minister Le Minh Hoan, the European Union (EU) is an important leading partner in trade, investment, science and technology and development cooperation. The EU’s cooperation and support over the past time has made an important contribution to the transformation of Vietnam’s agricultural industry towards a green and sustainable agriculture.

Vietnam has issued a Strategy for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050. In the process of formulating the strategy, Vietnam has referred to a number of pioneering EU policies such as favorable green; safe, healthy and environmentally friendly food chain strategy; circular economy; biodiversity…

Realizing Vietnam’s commitments at COP26, along with the implementation of the strategy, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is developing a plan to implement the Glasgow Declaration on “Forests and Land Use” in order to manage and use the existing forest area while promoting the planting of new forests to absorb and store carbon.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is also coordinating with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to develop a national strategy on climate change for the period 2022-2030. After the strategy is issued, the ministry will issue an action plan to respond to climate change in the agricultural sector.

The ministry is developing a plan to mitigate the sector’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 in consultation with international partners including the EU on building low-carbon agricultural value chain development projects…
