16 August 2023, AU: Grain growers from across northern NSW and Queensland can expect to benefit from key insights such as most profitable crop and fertiliser choices, as the latest research into northern farming systems is released.
The Queensland Department Agriculture and Fisheries (QDAF), NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) and CSIRO have come together with the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) to hold the forums which will discuss the outcomes of an intensive 8-year research journey, delving deep into the intricacies of farming system options across the region.
GRDC sustainable cropping systems manager John Rochecouste says the Northern Farming Systems Discussion Forums will ensure growers have access to the most recent, relevant research outcomes.
“Our northern farming systems research has always been about pushing the boundaries of what we know and understand about sustainable cropping,” Dr Rochecouste says.
“The insights we’ve gained from this project over the years are not just for academic research purposes. They have practical, on-the-ground implications that can improve profit and yield outcomes for northern farming systems.
“We’re excited to share these outcomes and ensure we deliver the tools, knowledge, and strategies essential for sustained profitability.”
Principal development extension officer at DAF Jayne Gentry says that the performance of farming system options across the region will be the key point of discussion at the forums.
“Our research has compared crop intensity, crop choice, higher fertiliser rates, increased use of grain legumes, and pasture phases in northern farming systems.
“We’re hoping to facilitate conversations that allow practical on-farm applications of the research outcomes across a range of areas,” she says.
Industry experts such as Lindsay Bell, David Lester, Steven Simpfenndorfer, James Hagen and Andrew Erbacher will share essential insights with attendees such as:
