14 October 2023, Rome: The Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), QU Dongyu, visited the Coldiretti Village at the Circus Maximus in Rome today.

The Coldiretti Village is an annual event, organized by Italy’s largest farmers union, showcasing the country’s agricultural sector, and promoting biodiversity and sustainability by bringing together rural and urban contexts, as well as agribusinesses and institutions.

FAO has joined the event this year to highlight the importance of transforming global agrifood systems and to promote healthy diets.

Visiting the event, the FAO Director-General stressed the important role played by family farmers in the much-needed transformation of agrifood systems, to make them more efficient, resilient, inclusive, and sustainable.

“Family farmers” he said, “are agents of change on the ground and FAO is committed to supporting them reach their full potential”.

At the event, FAO has an interactive space to raise awareness about the importance of water – in line with World Food Day 2023 theme “Water is life, water is food. Leave no one behind”, as well as a space dedicated to youth and families aiming to teach them about the Right to Food, the importance of family farming and its role in ensuring sustainable rural development, food security and nutrition for all.

During his visit, the FAO Director-General met with farmers and food producers from all over Italy and was briefed on the latest trends and innovations in the Italian agrifood sector.
