CropLife Europe comment on latest EU Harmonised Risk Indicators for pesticides

31 August 2023, EU: On 30th of August European Commission released the updated data on the HRI for pesticides for the period 2011-2021. Responding to the publication CropLife Europe commented: “There is a clear trend showing a decline in pesticide use and risk, with a further decrease of 6%. This showcases the real on field transformation that farmers have been making with the increased uptake of IPM and new innovative tools taking into account the baseline set over 10 years ago.

Nevertheless, farmers toolboxes need to be replenished. We need to ensure adequate alternatives be it pesticides or biopesticides are available before removing solutions. It is even more vital, with the increasing challenges of food security, to ensure farmers have access to a continuous supply of effective solutions to protect crops from pests and diseases.

We continue to encourage the European Commission to complement the HRIs with data from field use applications”
