DBW 327 (Karan Shivani) Wheat Variety Sets New Yield Records in Punjab and Haryana

22 April 2024, New Delhi: In a significant agricultural milestone, farmers of Fatehgadh Sahib district of Punjab and Panipat district of Haryana have reported record-breaking yields with the DBW 327 (Karan Shivan) variety, developed by ICAR-Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research, Karnal. DBW 327 (Karan Shivani) variety emerged as the exceptional performer in two major wheat-growing states.

The climate resilient and biofortified (Zn- 40.6 ppm) variety developed by ICAR-IIWBR, Karnal, and released for cultivation in the North Western Plain Zone by CVRC (vide notification no. S.O.8(E) dated 24.12.2021) for irrigated & early sown conditions and further notified for Central Zone in 2023. ICAR recognized this variety as one of the best crop science technologies on the eve of ICAR Foundation Day, 2023. This variety has a yield potential of 87.7 q/ha with an average yield of 79.4q/ha, as a new benchmark for wheat production. Farmers received quality seeds from the ICAR-IIWBR Seed Portal, provided feedback, and reported the highest yield, highlighting the success of agricultural research and innovation in this variety.

Mr. Davinder Singh alias Harjeet Singh, Village Chiarthal Khurd, Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab, a young progressive farmer, expressed his views on the performance of the variety and stated that he obtained 33.70 quintals per acre (84.0 q/ha) of yield with sowing on 08th November 2023.   

Mr. Suresh Kumar,  Mittan Farm,  Village-Barouli, Panipat, Haryana credited the DBW 327 variety for an exceptional yield level of 32.40 quintals/acre (81.0 q/ha) on sowing of 7th November 2023.

Dr. Gyanendra Singh, Director, ICAR-IIWBR, Karnal, emphasized developing improved crop varieties to meet the evolving needs of the farmers. He further stated that DBW 327 variety’s success demonstrates our commitment to research and development, empowering farmers and ensuring the country’s food security.

The outstanding performance of the DBW 327 (Karan Shivani) variety underscores the pivotal role of research in driving agricultural transformation and enabling farmers to achieve a high level of wheat production.
