Lantmännen Continues to Invest in Sweden’s Grain Infrastructure

11 April 2024, Sweden: Lantmännen has invested approximately SEK 100 million in the port facility on Djurön outside Norrköping. With a new boat loader in place adjacent to the grain facility, grain exports can resume in one of the country’s most important export ports.

The investment in the facility on Djurön is an investment in an improved and future-proof Swedish grain infrastructure. The facility is dimensioned to meet the needs of farmers in the region both today and in the future and will be able to load vessels with up to 60,000 tonnes – which is the largest size of vessel that can be received at Lantmännen’s port facilities.

The investment of approximately SEK 100 million has mainly been used to construct a new boat loader and cabin next to the facility’s silos. The facility on Djurön is not only important for the local area but also for businesses in nearby regions.

Lantmännen’s grain facility on Djurön outside Norrköping, which has been on the site since 1978, consists of 20 silos with 3 dryers and has a storage capacity of 250,000 tonnes of grain.

“The fact that our members, active Swedish farmers, should have a market for the grain they deliver is part of our core business. Hence, it is rewarding to be able to inaugurate the new boat loader and resume the export flows at the plant. This creates good opportunities for Swedish farmers and for Lantmännen to be able to load vessels of this size,” says Elisabeth Ringdahl, Executive Vice President Agriculture Sector, Lantmännen.

In February, ground was broken in Uddevalla, where a new grain plant will be built. Further investments are also planned in Västerås, Köping and Hargshamn. The aggregated amount of these investments exceeds SEK one billion. Through increased capacity and improved export opportunities, these investments will contribute to growth and increased profitability for Swedish farmers. The facilities’ extensive storage capacity also has the potential to contribute to increased national food preparedness.

“Continued investments in a well-functioning grain infrastructure are important for increasing growth and profitability in Swedish agriculture. The plant’s extensive storage capacity and export opportunities also contribute to Sweden’s food preparedness. In the event of national crises or international disruptions, export flows can be turned inwards and thus contribute to Swedish preparedness,” says Magnus Kagevik, President and CEO, Lantmännen.
