Five minutes with Anton Mannes

13 December 2023, AUAnton has been with Elders for almost two years, working in the Bendigo branch as a senior agronomist, specialising in broadacre operations.

Day to day, Anton spends time with his clients, developing tailored programs to help them maximise their crops.

“With everything I do, my main focus is looking at sustainably maximising my clients’ profitability,” Anton said.

“I want to bring a customised plan for each grower to ensure the best outcome for their enterprise, allowing them to grow their business.”

Aside from this, Anton has recently been involved in developing a trial site at Derby, north west of Bendigo. The site covers a huge variety of different trials, mainly in crop protection products across wheat, barley, bean and canola crops.

Anton explained that the trial enables local agronomists to explore some of the newest products and ideas.

“Trial sites are so important because they help us see what is coming through the industry and how it could be applied in our own backyards,” he said.

“We try to treat the trial site like our own farm, where we want to get the best out of all cropping and grazing techniques.

“By exploring new and innovative ideas alongside some of the more left-field ideas, we are trying to discover what best practice might look like and how it can be implemented in farming systems.”

Anton said that trial sites can bring a range of benefits to both local growers and advisors, with almost 200 people having visited this trial site throughout the year.

Most recently, the team joined forces with valued suppliers Bayer, BASF, Nuseed, Pacific Seeds and FMC to hold a field day. This event alone drew in over 80 attendees, who were able to view the site, attend information sessions and come together for lunch.

“Having a site like this provides a fantastic networking opportunity for growers and agronomists to come and visit the site, and look at different farming options,” Anton said.

“This year we have run three breakfast meetings, our main field day and a few agronomy catchup sessions at the site.”

Growers interested in viewing the Derby trial site can get in touch with the Elders branch in Bendigo to discuss.

The trial site at Derby is one of many Elders trial sites across Australia; from Gatton, Queensland to Esperance, Western Australia and everywhere in between.
