30 March 2022, New Delhi: The Central Government has extended free import of Urad and Pigeon Pea by one year. This will help to increase the supply and availability in the domestic division and to keep the prices at a reasonable level.

Earlier this import period was ending on 31 March 2022 but now it will continue till 31 March 2023 and during this period Indian importers will be able to import these two pulses as per their wish and requirement.

A notification No. 63/2015-20 issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), a body under the Union Ministry of Commerce, dated March 29, 2022, states that the import of urad under ITC (HS) code 07133110 and Tuar under HS Code 07136000 will be in ‘free’ category till 31st March, 2023.

Before this notification imports were allowed for BL date till 31.03.22 and same was supposed to reach Indian port by 30 June 2022.

The domestic production of these two pulses is not encouraging and to curtail the price rise, the government had to take this precautionary step. Urad is mainly imported into India from Myanmar while Tuar is imported from Myanmar as well as African countries. With the extension of the free import period by one year, the pressure on the prices of urad and tur in the domestic segment may increase for short period as per IGrain India.

During many meeting with concern department, the pulses industry along with various associations were asking for long term policies. This circular shows seriousness of government for Pulses Industry.
