Promoting cooperation in agriculture between the Netherlands and Vietnam
19 December 2022, VN: From December 9-15, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) Le Minh Hoan and the Government delegation led by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh visited and worked in Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Belgium.
Here, Minister Le Minh Hoan had separate activities in the Netherlands and Belgium, focusing on the agricultural issues of these European countries.
In the Netherlands, the Minister visited the model of sand pumping encroached on natural disaster reduction, the Maeslantkering flood barrier, the World Horticultural Center (WHC) in Naaldwijk, attended the Vietnam – Netherlands Gardeners Forum and the Giethoorn Ancient Village, etc.
Speaking at the World Horticultural Center (WHC), Minister Le Minh Hoan said that this is the first time he has come to the Netherlands with the role of Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnamese people have learned from the Dutch one thing. That is the Netherlands does not see climate change as a threat or challenge for the economy and agricultural sector, but also sees it as an opportunity to take advantage of development, turn risks into threats, turn difficulties into easy, and turn obstacles into problems can become possible.
“As Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said, the Dutch agricultural development model can be said to be very suitable for Vietnam in the context of limited land, an increasingly large population and a climate change verbs do not tend to decrease,” said Minister Le Minh Hoan.
Therefore, Vietnam’s agricultural industry is transforming towards a multi-valued agriculture, also known as “eco-agriculture, modern countryside, smart farmers”.
“We are also pursuing and striving to have many rich, beautiful and happy villages associated with typical agricultural products (OCOP), thereby having a high spread to rural areas across the country,” Mr. Le Minh Hoan said.
Besides the proposals of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Minister Le Minh Hoan also made a number of proposals for the Dutch side. First, he hoped that the two sides would continue to strengthen cooperation to mobilize more resources from investors, donors, and development partners to join hands in implementing the Sustainable Agriculture Transformation Plan in the Mekong Delta and other regions of Vietnam such as the Central Highlands and the North.
In addition, the Minister also proposed the Netherlands to support Vietnam in cold storage and logistics systems in the Mekong Delta to complete the supply chain of agricultural products, especially in Can Tho province to form a transit and connection center for the whole region of the Mekong Delta. The goal is to make these beautiful places a center of sustainable agricultural and food supply for the Netherlands and the EU.
In addition, the Netherlands is requested to support Vietnam in establishing a Food Innovation Center for Southeast Asia and 100 million low-emission farmers. The Minister also asked the Netherlands to coordinate and support the organization of the 2023 International Conference on the food system in Vietnam to contribute to ensuring food security in the context of the world economic recession and conflicts in supply disruption.
Technical support, investment attraction, ODA and favorable farming models, ecological agriculture to enhance competition, improve agricultural production efficiency associated with emission reduction according to Vietnam’s commitments South at COP26 was also mentioned by the Minister./.
