Kisan-Vigyan Foundation submits representation on India’s Food Security to Agriculture Secretary
24 October 2023, New Delhi: Kisan-Vigyan Foundation (Krishi Anusandhan & Krishi Vikas Foundation) submitted a white paper on ‘Will India be Food Secure in 2047’ to Manoj Ahuja, Agriculture Secretary of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.
The foundation’s white paper ‘Will India be Food Secure in 2047’ focuses on fundamental aspects of food security taking in published data to raise curiosity among all the relevant stakeholders and citizens of India at large and call for solutions. India currently ranks 68 out of 113 major countries on the Food Security Index as of 2022. With the population expected to reach 1.6 billion by 2047, India needs to prepare to optimize resources and plan for higher production. The white paper highlights the major areas of concern including land use efficiency, productivity, and resource optimization.
The white paper and its objective were shared with Mr. Ahuja in the presence of the governing council members of the Kisan-Vigyan Foundation led by Vijay Sardana, N.K. Arora, R.K. Malik, and Nimish Gangrade. While handing over the white paper, the governing council members had a detailed discussion with the Secretary on core issues to be addressed. Mr. Ahuja suggested that critical findings should be discussed with key stakeholders and need brainstorming to find workable solutions to the challenges and an invitation should be extended to all stakeholders including political leadership and Hon’ble Agriculture Ministers of all the states for a brainstorming session.
The foundation expects that this white paper will create a base to find the solutions to the issues faced by India’s food security and will generate serious discussion in policy corridors at the national as well as state levels. It is high time we explore appropriate policies well in time to ensure sustainable food security when the Hon’ble Prime Minister wants to define the plan for developed India by 2047.
