World environment day celebrated at PAU

07 June 2021, Punjab: The Department of Soil and Water Engineering, Punjab Agricultural University, celebrated World Environment Day on June 5, 2021 by organizing a virtual meeting in which students and faculty of the University participated.

Dr Kamal Gurmeet Singh, Head, Department of Soil and Water Engineering, welcomed the speakers Dr PK Sidhu, Head, Department of Climate Change and Agrometeorology and Dr Sanjeev Chauhan, Head, Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, PAU. He also briefed the audience about the history of World Environment Day.

In her lecture, Dr Sidhu explained the present status of the environment and made the participants aware of Ecosystem Restoration, the theme of the day. She shed light on the ill effects of climate change on agriculture as well as human beings. She urged the participants to act, change their habits, such as, using less water for sanitation, changing dietary habits, cleaning rivers and environment around, and of course pollute less.

Dr Chauhan deliberated on sustaining forestry and its contribution to the environment. He apprised of various phases of forest cover in India; the present phase from 2020 onwards is the conservation and sustainability of forest cover. He stressed to mitigate (reduce the emissions), sequester (fix the emissions) and adapt (adjust to the emissions).

Dr Rakesh Sharda, Principal Extension Scientist (soil and water engineering), coordinated the event and called upon the participants to plant a tree per family and nurture it.

Dr Rajan Aggarwal, Head, Department of Renewable Energy Engineering proposed a vote of thanks.
