KVK And FASC, Sangrur Organized A Webinar on Direct Seeded Rice

20 May 2021, Punjab, IN: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kheri and Farm Advisory Service Centre, Sangrur jointly organized a webinar-cum-farmer training programme on Direct Seeded Rice under the aegis of Directorate of Extension Education, PAU, Ludhiana and ICAR-ATARI, Zone 1, Ludhiana on 19.05.2021.

In the beginning, Dr Mandeep Singh, Associate Director (Trg.), KVK, Kheri extended a warm welcome to the participating farmers and officials and shared the benefits and challenges in adoption of Direct Seeded Rice. He introduced farmers with different methods of DSR technology and motivated them to come forward for promoting and adopting direct seeded rice by learning important tips of this novel technique in order to conserve the precious underground water resources of the state.

Dr. Buta Singh Romana, Senior Extension Specialist-cum-Head, Farm Advisory Service Centre, Sangrur elaborated various recommended practices for DSR and showed deep concern over continuously declining underground water table in the district. He explained in detail about selection of field, land preparation, suitable varieties, time of sowing, etc. He shared the role of short duration varieties of paddy in conserving underground water resources and also discussed the problems faced by farmers during previous year like poor weed control, appearance of zinc and iron deficiency and problem of krand in tar-wattar sowing.

Dr. Sunil Kumar, Asstt. Prof. (FMPE) shared details of various machineries for DSR and adjustments available in those machines for controlling seed rate. He further explained the methods to modify Happy seeder and zero till drill into DSR drill and method for their calibration. Dr. Amandeep Kaur, DES (Agronomy) shared technical information regarding efficient weed management and proper spraying techniques for effective management of different types of weeds in direct seeded rice. She emphasized on right choice of nozzle while spraying the weedicides. Dr Ashok Kumar, Asstt. Prof. (Soil Science) discussed about use of different fertilizers on the basis of soil type as well as symptoms and remedial measures for the management of micronutrient deficiencies in DSR. Dr. Gurbir Kaur, Asstt. Prof. (Plant Protection) explained method of seed treatment and recommended rat control measures in direct seeded rice.

Progressive farmers namely S. Jagjiwan Singh (Rinku) from Village Ubhawal and S. Harpal Singh from Village Khetla exchanged their valuable experiences regarding successful cultivation as well as emerging problems in DSR. Another farmer S. Buta Singh from Village Dhira Pattran, Dist Ferozepur appreciated the efforts of KVK and FASC, Sangrur for disseminating the knowledge about DSR amongst large number of farmers by organizing online webinar and insisted to continue with such type of virtual programmes in future too to acquaint farmers with latest technologies of PAU and suggesting solutions to the problems of the farmers. In the end, the queries and doubts raised by the participants were well answered by the team of FASC and KVK experts.
