Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur Celebrated World Honey Bee Day in Virtual Mode

22 May 22021, Punjab, IN: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur celebrated “World Honey Bee Day – 2021” through virtual platform under the guidance of Directorate of Extension Education, PAU, Ludhiana and ICAR-ATARI, Zone-1, Ludhiana on 20.5.2021 in which 32 beekeepers and other farmers participated.

At the outset, Dr. Mandeep Singh, Associate Director (Trg.), Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur extended a warm welcome to the participating bee-keepers and officials from the Horticulture Department. He highlighted the importance of beekeeping in generating income and

employment amongst rural population and the role of honey bees in increasing agricultural production/productivity though pollination process. He also acquainted the participants regarding the usage and benefits of honey for human health. He further shared that KVKs provide vocational trainings in beekeeping to develop new start-ups in honey production.

Dr. Gurbir Kaur, Asstt. Prof. (Plant Pathology) coordinated the programme and explained about income opportunities from byproducts of bee keeping as well as production and processing of honey. She also shared technical information regarding management of diseases and insects of honey bees.

Dr. Karnail Singh, Deputy Director (Horticulture), Punjab shared various governmentschemes and subsidies being provided for beekeeping and honey bee projects.

The progressive beekeepers namely S. Kuldeep Singh from Village Narike and S. Baljinder Singh from Dirba shared their success stories and briefly discussed the problems of beekeepers and its possible solutions. Both of them are registered with Horticulture department as an approved bee breeder and marketing their honey under the brand names “U-Young Honey” and “Jiwan Care” respectively.

In the end, Dr. Gurbir Kaur proposed vote of thanks to all the participants for joining the online programme.
