India Strengthens Agri-Tech Ties with Brazil During Chouhan’s BRICS Visit
22 April 2025, New Delhi: Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, concluded his visit to Brazil on Monday, 21 April, marking a significant step forward in India’s global agricultural engagement. Leading the Indian delegation at the 15th BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting in Brasília, the Minister emphasized strengthening agricultural trade, technology exchange, and innovation between India and Brazil.
A major highlight of the visit was India’s push to promote soybean production and exports. Chouhan underlined the importance of giving Indian farmers access to advanced global technologies to enhance productivity. He reiterated that empowering small farmers is central to achieving global food security, stating that without their inclusion, the objective remains incomplete.
Speaking at the BRICS forum, Chouhan advocated for deeper collaboration in agricultural research, food processing, and trade facilitation. He emphasized India’s commitment to inclusive, sustainable, and equitable agriculture, guided by the ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family.
The BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting was attended by representatives from member countries including Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, and new members such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Iran. The event focused on promoting sustainable agriculture through innovation and equitable trade.
Apart from his multilateral engagements, Chouhan held bilateral meetings with Brazil’s Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Henrique Baquetta Favero, and Minister of Agricultural Development and Family Agriculture, Luiz Paulo Teixeira. Discussions centered around agro-technology, rural development, food security, and potential collaborations in areas like climate-resilient soybean varieties, mechanization, and precision farming.
During his visit, the Union Minister toured soybean production units, tomato farms, and agricultural research institutes to explore opportunities for technology transfer in seed development, irrigation, and food processing. Notably, both countries are now exploring joint investments in soybean processing infrastructure in India, which could significantly boost domestic production and reduce reliance on imports.
Meetings with Brazil’s agribusiness leaders in São Paulo further opened doors for collaboration in food processing, biofuels, supply chain integration, and farm machinery—aimed at delivering tangible benefits to Indian farmers.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan also participated in a tree plantation drive under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative at the Indian Embassy in Brasília and interacted with members of the Indian diaspora, appreciating their contribution to strengthening bilateral ties.
Reflecting on the visit, the Union Minister said, “Brazil has set a benchmark in agricultural exports and innovation. We aim to bring these best practices to India, benefiting our farmers and contributing to global food security.”
