Sugarcane variety Co 0238
12 June 2024, New Delhi: Co 0238 (Karan 4) is a high yielding and high sugar content variety, derived from the cross Co LK 8102 x Co 775. This is an early maturing variety for commercial cultivation in the North-West Zone (NWZ) comprising the states of Haryana, Punjab, Western and Central Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan. The yield of Co 0238 is about 81 tonnes/ hectare.
The jaggery of Co 0238 is of A1 quality with a light yellow color. This variety is moderately resistant to the prevalent races of red rot pathogen.
Co 0238 had medium thick green-yellow canes with cylindrical internodes, pentagonal buds, deltoid auricles, and shallow bud grooves. The clone is free from splits, and spines on the leaf sheath, pith, and bud cushion. The fibre % is about 13.05 %. The jaggery is of A1 quality with a light yellow color. This clone is MR to the prevalent races of red rot pathogen by plug method of inoculation. However, it showed a resistant reaction to the nodal method of inoculation. Leaf drying during summer is common in this variety but farmers need not worry as it will not reduce cane yield.
