25 August 2022, New Delhi: In a notification released today, the government of India announced its decision to have single brand of fertilizer under One Nation One Fertilizer scheme.

Urea, DAP, MOP, NPK etc of all Fertilizer Companies, State Trading Organizations and Fertilizer Marketing Institutions will now be called Bharat Urea, Bharat DAP, Bharat MOP and Bharat NPK. A logo depicting the Fertilizer Subsidy Scheme ‘Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Januvarak Pariyojana’ will be printed on the fertilizer bags.

The name of the company will be written on the fertilizer bag in a very small size, but the guidelines for this are not clear yet. A spokesperson for the fertilizer industry told Krishak Jagat, “The decision to have a uniform packaging is good but the name of the fertilizer company written in small size is discouraging for companies. Fertilizer companies do a lot of agricultural extension activities with farmers. The extension activities by the employees of the fertilizer company helps the farmers to understand the optimum usage and latest practices of fertilizers. This also helps the company to promote its brand. Now since the logo of the fertilizer company will not be big on the fertilizer bag, it may reduce the activity of the company on the farms.”

Until now, farmers knew what a bag of fertilizer from their preferred and trusted company looked like. In the future, they have to carefully look at the brand name and logo of the company on the bag and decide on the purchase.

The government has directed fertilizer companies not to buy old sacks after August 15, 2022. The new sacks will be started from 2nd September 2022.
