Rates of Garlic for the first three weeks in September

The month of September is becoming difficult for onion, tomato, garlic and other vegetable farmers. Rain at various places is affecting the harvesting schedule of crops. Although there has not been an exponential increase in the quantity being bought in the market, the prices have remained low.

The farmers may be selling all their produce at the lowest rates in the mandis, but the consumers in the market are buying the same produce at least 3 to 4 times more than the purchase cost.

Garlic is being sold in the urban market at around Rs 94.78 per kg, which is more than 500 times the purchase price from farmers. The maximum profit is being absorbed by the supply chain from mandis to urban markets in rural areas. Traders, transporters and vendors of fruits and vegetables are the major beneficiaries in urban markets.
