Wheat Seed Subsidy: BJP Seeks to Financially Undermine Punjab’s Farmers, Alleges Congress
Report By Jag Mohan Thaken
06 November 2024, Chandigarh: The Punjab State Congress Party has alleged that the BJP-led central government is financially undermining Punjab’s farmers.
Leader of the Opposition, Partap Singh Bajwa, issued a strong condemnation of the BJP-led Union Government Wednesday, accusing it of persistent and deliberate attempts to financially destabilize Punjab’s farmers.
Referring to a recent news report, Bajwa, in a statement released to the media, highlighted that 68 percent of small and marginal farmers in Punjab will receive subsidized wheat seeds for only one acre of land. This represents a drastic reduction from the previous policy, which provided subsidized seeds for up to five acres per farmer.
“After orchestrating a paddy procurement crisis in Punjab from which our farmers are still recovering, the central BJP government has now turned its focus to wheat sowing. As the season for wheat planting begins, they have restricted the supply of DAP—the essential fertilizer for this crop—while also limiting subsidized wheat seeds for small and marginal farmers to just one acre,” Bajwa remarked.
Senior Congress leader Bajwa asserted that the BJP government’s actions demonstrate a consistent pattern of undermining Punjab’s agrarian community. These cumulative policies, he argued, expose the BJP’s apparent agenda to financially weaken Punjab’s farmers and create constant economic hurdles for them.
“It was Punjab’s farmers who led a year-long peaceful protest at Delhi’s borders, compelling the BJP-led government to repeal its three anti-farmer laws. Now, it appears that the BJP is intent on exacting revenge by systematically targeting Punjab’s farming community,” Bajwa stated.
Bajwa affirmed that the Punjab Congress stands resolutely with the state’s farmers during these challenging times and will continue to expose and counter the BJP’s divisive policies and agendas aimed at destabilizing Punjab’s agrarian economy.
