Wheat Harvest Crosses 38%, Shivraj Singh Directs Strengthening of Procurement System
16 April 2025, New Delhi: Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday stated that India has completed harvesting on 38% of the estimated 32 million hectares sown under wheat for the 2025-26 marketing season. Considering the prospects of a good yield across various rabi crops, the Minister instructed officials to strengthen procurement arrangements for farmers.
Chouhan noted that the harvesting situation is “satisfactory” in key wheat-producing states such as Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Bihar. The government has set a target to procure 31 million tonnes of wheat during the 2025-26 marketing season (April–March).
According to official data, as of April 4, farmers had completed harvesting on 91% of the area under rabi pulses, 87% under oilseeds, 70% under millets and coarse grains, and 33% under rice. Overall, 59% of the total rabi crop area across the country had been harvested by April 4.
In addition to rabi crops like wheat, the Minister also reviewed the progress of zaid crops (grown between the rabi and kharif seasons). This year, the total area under zaid cultivation has reached 6.02 million hectares, up from 5.24 million hectares last year. Of this, rice has been sown on 3.2 million hectares, pulses on 1.1 million hectares, and oilseeds on 0.735 million hectares.
