‘Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan’ to be Launched Across Over 700 Districts in India: Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan
Agricultural scientists to visit villages and directly engage with farmers: Shivraj Singh
13 May 2025, New Delhi: The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), will launch a nationwide initiative called the ‘Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan’ (Campaign for Developed Agriculture). Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, announced that the campaign will be held across more than 700 districts from May 29 to June 12.
As part of the initiative, agricultural scientists, ministry officials and staff will form teams with local agricultural workers to visit different villages each day. They will engage in direct dialogue with farmers, offer practical advice, and raise awareness on various agricultural issues. This significant effort aims to realize Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Lab to Land” vision—ensuring that scientific research and innovations reach farmers’ fields.
This campaign also marks a step forward toward the broader goal of “One Nation, One Agriculture, One Team”, while promoting modern and model farming practices.
A high-level meeting was held today in Delhi under the leadership of Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to prepare for the campaign. The meeting included representatives from 731 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), over 100 ICAR institutions, agricultural research bodies, and senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare. The meeting was conducted in a hybrid format. Also present were Union Agriculture Secretary Mr. Devesh Chaturvedi and ICAR Director General Dr. M.L. Jat.
Minister Chouhan emphasized that the goal of this innovative and ambitious initiative is to upgrade Indian agriculture and deliver direct benefits to farmers. During the campaign, farmers will be educated on advanced technologies, new crop varieties, government schemes, and natural farming practices.
Each team—comprising four scientists—will guide farmers on using balanced fertilizers as per soil health card recommendations. Demonstrations of drone technology in agriculture will be conducted by KVKs, ICAR institutions, and organizations like IFFCO. The campaign will also involve the extensive use of ICT tools to raise awareness among farmers.
Key technologies such as direct seeding of rice (DSR), crop diversification, and farm mechanization in soybean cultivation will also be promoted by KVK experts. Teams will include representatives from State Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries departments, ATMA officials, plant protection officers from the National Pest Surveillance System (NPSS), along with progressive farmers, agri-entrepreneurs, FPO/FIG/self-help group members.
During the meeting, Minister Chouhan reiterated, “Our resolve for a developed India lies in developed farming and prosperous farmers. And if we want to make our farmers prosperous, we must help them adopt better farming practices.” He further clarified, “This campaign is not just a ritual. It is not a program that will yield results in 10–20 years; rather, we expect to see positive outcomes by the upcoming Kharif season within three months.”
Minister Chouhan stressed that agricultural research must reach farmers’ fields. He expressed hope that the campaign will ignite curiosity and interest among farmers and motivate scientists as well. He urged scientists to work with dedication, as their efforts would bring significant benefits to the country and its farmers.
To ensure effective coordination, the Union Minister has written to Chief Ministers of all states, while Agriculture Secretary Mr. Chaturvedi and ICAR DG Dr. Jat have also communicated with top officials in the states. A comprehensive action plan has been prepared to ensure the success of this nationwide campaign.
