Unseasonal Storms Wreck Over 1,300 Hectares of Crops in Jalgaon and Nashik-Banana and Onion Farmers Hit Hard
16 April 2025, Nashik: More than 1,300 hectares of farmland in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon and Nashik districts have been severely affected by unexpected rain, hailstorms, and strong winds over the weekend, according to local agriculture officials.
In Jalgaon, heavy rains battered six talukas, with banana plantations bearing the brunt. Preliminary estimates suggest over 1,300 hectares of crops may be damaged, though initial assessments have only covered 596 hectares so far. Of this, approximately 540 hectares were banana crops. Other crops like maize, wheat, and sorghum (jowar) were also impacted, but detailed evaluations are still underway.
Raver, Muktainagar, and Bodwad talukas received rainfall on Friday, while Chopada, Yaval, and Jalgaon talukas were affected over the weekend, further delaying the damage surveys. In Raver alone, 510 hectares of crop loss have been reported by 732 farmers from 19 villages. In Muktainagar, 117 farmers across three villages reported damage to 55.5 hectares, while Bodwad saw 30 farmers impacted over 31 hectares.
Minister of Water Supply and Sanitation of Maharashtra Gulabrao Patil, Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Jalgaon constituency has urged revenue officers to expedite the damage verification process, known locally as panchanama, and submit reports for government assistance. “Once the report is ready, we will forward it for financial aid to the affected farmers,” said Patil.
Meanwhile, in Nashik district, Yeola and Sinnar talukas experienced comparatively lighter crop damage. About 14 hectares of crops were affected, mostly onions, impacting 31 farmers. Sinnar reported the worst onion losses, with 29 farmers losing crops on around 10 hectares. Reports of damage have also emerged from Niphad and Chandwad, though official assessments in those areas are still pending.
Both districts are now awaiting final survey results, which will determine the scope of compensation and relief for distressed farmers.
