Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Highlights Digital Revolution and Congress’ Missed Opportunities
03 April 2025, New Delhi: Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, criticized the Congress party during a discussion in the Rajya Sabha on March 28 regarding farmers’ issues. Highlighting the government’s efforts under the Digital Agriculture Mission, Chouhan stated that this initiative could bring a significant transformation in farmers’ lives. He accused the Congress of ruling for decades after independence but never truly understanding farmers’ struggles.
Referring to the famous Hindi novel Raag Darbari by Shrilal Shukla, Chouhan mentioned the character ‘Kisan Langad,’ who repeatedly visited the tehsil for land records but returned empty-handed each time. He claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi understood these challenges and introduced the Digital Agriculture Mission to resolve them.
Over 4.60 Crore Farmers Registered with Digital IDs
Chouhan revealed that more than 4.60 crore farmers have been issued digital Farmer IDs under the initiative. This system aims to bring transparency to land transactions. Explaining its benefits, he said, “If a farmer sells his land, the registry will immediately update that the ownership has transferred from one person to another.” Additionally, the Digital Crop Survey will help track which crops farmers cultivate, ensuring they receive the correct government benefits.
Grievance Redressal and Data Protection Measures
The government has established a grievance redressal system for any issues related to the Farmer Registry. Farmers can file complaints via mobile and web applications. Addressing concerns about data security, Chouhan assured that farmers’ data would remain private and would not be shared without their consent.
Quoting a former Prime Minister’s statement that “only 15 paise of every rupee sent by the government actually reached the people,” Chouhan contrasted it with the present scenario. “Now, with just one click, PM Modi directly transfers money into the accounts of 9.8 crore farmers,” he said, calling it a result of the digital revolution.
Efforts to Increase Farmers’ Income
The minister emphasized that the government is continuously working to boost farmers’ income. The Farmer Registry has been linked with state revenue records to ensure instant land information updates. However, he criticized opposition parties, accusing them of making false promises and misleading the public.
Challenges in Implementing Digital Agriculture
Agriculture experts acknowledge that while the Digital Agriculture Mission can improve transparency, its success depends on awareness and access to technology at the grassroots level. Many farmers still lack smartphones and internet connectivity, posing a challenge in fully utilizing this initiative.
