Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Visits Soybean Production Plant and Tomato Farms in Brazil
Shivraj Singh Chouhan Chouhan is currently in Brazil to attend the 15th Meeting of Agriculture Ministers of BRICS Nations
18 April 2025, New Delhi: Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, is on an official visit to Brazil to participate in the 15th meeting of Agriculture Ministers of BRICS countries. During the visit, he toured a soybean production plant, tomato farms, and other agricultural institutions in Brazil.
Minister Chouhan observed the advanced mechanization and irrigation techniques being implemented in Brazilian agriculture and gathered insights into how such practices could benefit Indian farmers. He emphasized the importance of learning from Brazil’s success to further enhance productivity and sustainability in Indian farming.
India and Brazil can collaborate in soybean production and processing
While visiting the soybean production facility, Minister Chouhan expressed interest in increasing soybean production in India and establishing processing units in collaboration with Brazil. “Currently, India imports soy oil from Brazil. However, we have discussed potential investment and the possibility of setting up soy processing plants in India. If successful, India could also become a soy oil exporter,” he stated.
He further noted that Brazil has achieved nearly 100% mechanization in agriculture. “Even cotton harvesting here is done with harvesters. Their research institutions are doing commendable work, and we aim to explore joint research with ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) to develop better seed varieties,” he added.
Strengthening agri-trade and inviting Brazilian delegation to India
Minister Chouhan invited the Brazilian agri-business community to visit India and explore collaborative opportunities. He expressed confidence that such partnerships would strengthen trade, technology exchange, and mutual growth in the agriculture sector between the two nations.
Visit to tomato farms and advanced irrigation systems
Accompanied by the Brazilian Agriculture Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan also visited large-scale tomato farms spread over thousands of hectares. He observed advanced cultivation techniques, including variety trials where one variety was virus-resistant and another was not.
He highlighted Brazil’s impressive corn productivity of 22 tonnes per hectare and the fully mechanized system supporting it. He was particularly impressed by the precision irrigation system that uses nutrient-enriched water through sprinklers, delivering exactly the amount needed by the crops. The system also includes rainwater harvesting tanks to support irrigation during dry periods, making it both efficient and sustainable.
“Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”: India committed to global food security
Shivraj Singh Chouhan reiterated India’s vision of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family — and stated, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India has ensured its own food security and is now contributing to global food supply by exporting to many countries.”
He concluded by emphasizing the scope for joint efforts between India and Brazil in research, mechanization, seed development, and food processing — all while ensuring environmental sustainability and global food security.
