Tripura’s Bold Mission: Achieving Potato Self-Sufficiency by 2029 with High-Yield Super Seeds!

26 March 2025, Agartala: The government of Tripura has set an ambitious goal to achieve self-sufficiency in potato production by the 2029-30 financial year. To meet this target, the state’s Agriculture and Horticulture Department has adopted a comprehensive strategy, offering farmers access to high-yield potato seeds and modern cultivation techniques.

In the 2024-25 financial year, a total of 402 farmers from eight districts were provided with Apical Rooted Cuttings (ARC) potato seeds. This initiative builds on the successful introduction of five high-yielding potato varieties from Haryana: Kufri Mohan, Kufri Himalini, Kufri Uday, Kufri Lima, and Kufri Thor-2.

Previously, 104 farmers had experimented with these varieties, and notable results included a record-breaking yield of 61.2 metric tons per hectare achieved by Sajal Bhaumik from Betagaon in South Tripura — significantly surpassing traditional yield rates.

To ensure a steady supply of quality seeds, the government procured 40 metric tons of seed potatoes through the Tripura Horticulture Corporation at a rate of ₹25 per kg. These seeds were distributed to nearly 400 farmers, with each receiving 100 kg.

Encouraged by the positive outcomes, the government has raised the seed procurement price to ₹28 per kg for the next financial year. The plan for 2025-26 is to engage around 4,000 farmers in cultivating high-yield potato varieties using stored seeds.

The ARC method has demonstrated its effectiveness, with Komal Debnath from Betaga, South Tripura, achieving a yield of 51.2 metric tons per hectare. The success of this approach has sparked interest among farmers across the state.

Tripura’s overall yield this year reached an impressive 36.5 metric tons per hectare, surpassing the traditional yield of 19.16 metric tons per hectare. The state government has assured strict monitoring to prevent any misuse of the subsidized seeds.

Moving forward, the Agriculture and Horticulture Department remains committed to expanding potato cultivation while focusing on sustainability and achieving long-term self-reliance.
