Transforming Crop Protection: Indian Government Launches National Pest Surveillance System
21 August 2024, New Delhi: In a historic move on India’s 78th Independence Day, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (MoA&FW) unveiled the National Pest Surveillance System (NPSS), an initiative aimed at revolutionizing pest management in Indian agriculture. The launch event, held at Subramaniam Hall, PUSA, was attended by over 1,000 farmers and their spouses, who are beneficiaries of central government schemes like PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana and PM Fasal Bima Yojana, as well as representatives from Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs).
The event was graced by the presence of Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, who officially launched the NPSS. He was accompanied by Ministers of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Ramnath Thakur and Bhagirath Choudhary.
The National Pest Surveillance System is a digital platform that integrates cutting-edge technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), to provide timely and accurate pest management advisories. This initiative comprises a user-friendly mobile app and a web portal, making it easily accessible to farmers across the country. By utilizing real-time data and advanced analytics, the NPSS enables precise pest identification, monitoring, and management, offering farmers quick solutions to pest attacks and crop diseases.
The NPSS is expected to significantly reduce crop losses, thereby improving agricultural productivity. With comprehensive pest incidence data and automated advisories, farmers will be empowered with actionable insights to make informed decisions and take proactive measures to protect their crops. This marks a significant step forward in modernizing India’s agricultural sector, enhancing food security, and supporting sustainable farming practices.
